Boat vs Cable Explained

Choosing the right wakeboard is all about matching your weight, riding style, and where you ride.
Whether you spend more time behind the boat or at the cable park, the right setup makes all the difference.

1️⃣ Rocker Types – How Your Board Curves

The rocker is the curve of your board from tip to tail. It shapes how your board feels on the water, how it pops, and how it lands.

  • Continuous Rocker – Smooth curve from tip to tail

  • 3-Stage Rocker – Flat centre with aggressive kick at each end

  • Hybrid Rocker – A mix of both for versatility

Continuous Rocker

  • Smooth, fast and predictable.

  • Flows well through the park.

  • Softer landings and steady edging.
Best for: Cable riders who like a fluid feel.

3-Stage Rocker

  • Flat mid-section with abrupt tips.

  • Explosive, vertical pop off the wake.
Best for: Boat riders who want more lift and aggression.

Hybrid Rocker

  • A mix between continuous and 3-stage.

  • Balanced speed, pop and landings.
Best for: Riders who mix boat and cable equally.

2️⃣ Cable vs Boat Boards – The Big Differences

Feature Cable / Park Boat
Rocker Continuous or Hybrid 3-Stage or Hybrid
Base Grind base for rails and kickers Glossy speed base with fins & channels
Flex Softer for presses Stiffer for responsiveness
Ride Feel Smooth and forgiving Fast, explosive, and aggressive
Size Tendency Go longer (+4–10 cm) Go shorter for control

Why:
Cable riders rely on surface area for stability and presses at slower speeds.
Boat riders have the extra pull and wake lift, so they can ride a smaller, sharper board.

3️⃣ Wakeboard Size Chart

Start with your weight, then adjust based on your style.
If you mostly ride cable — choose from the Cable Size column.
If you mostly ride boat — drop down a few centimetres from the Cable Size.

Rider Weight (kg) Cable Size (cm) Boat Size (cm)
Under 45 125 – 135 120 – 130
45 – 55 135 – 140 130 – 135
55 – 65 140 – 145 135 – 140
65 – 80 145 – 150 138 – 143
80 – 100 150 – 155 142 – 147
100 – 110 + 155 – 160 + 146 – 152 +

Example:
At 65 kg, a 147 cm board feels perfect for cable riding — stable, smooth, and forgiving.
Behind the boat, you might prefer 140 cm for a quicker, snappier feel.

4️⃣ Quick Pro Tips

  • Park riders: Go longer for stability, softer landings, and better presses.

  • Boat riders: Go shorter for faster edges and stronger pop.

  • Hybrid riders: Pick a mid-length board with a hybrid rocker.

  • Always size for your weight first, then tweak for style and feel.

5️⃣ Why Cable and Boat Sizes Differ

At ProWake, we see it all the time — riders picking the wrong board because they follow the wrong chart.
Cable boards need more surface to float, glide, and land soft.
Boat boards are all about speed, edge hold, and vertical pop.

In short:
Go longer in the park.
Go sharper and smaller behind the boat.
